Not Tired

“I’m not tired,” Leo said.
His room was still buzzing
inside his head.

He hugged his mango, soft and bright:
“I still want to play tonight.”

The Magic Doorway

The mango plush felt warm in his hand,
like it somehow seemed to understand.

As he held it close,
the air felt new...
and a magic doorway
softly grew.

“I’ll find an animal,”
Leo said with cheer,
“one that stays awake all night,
I’m sure of it, just here!”

Illustration from “Even Animals Go to Bed”, scene 3: The Monkey

The Monkey

“A monkey!” said Leo, laughing loudly.
“He must stay up all night,
jumping around!”

The monkey swung once, then slowed his pace,
a sleepy yawn crossed his face.
“I played all day,” the monkey said,
“now night is for rest, and dreams in my head.”

Leo blinked. “Hmm... maybe not you.
I’ll keep on looking. I know what to do!”

Illustration from “Even Animals Go to Bed”, scene 4: The Lions

The Lions

Tall grass glowed in the fading light.
“Lions!” said Leo, excited and bright.
“You roar and run and wrestle all day!”

The baby lion stretched, then lay.

“I grow strong when I sleep at night,
close to my family, safe and tight.”

Leo whispered, “Okay... but still,
someone out there must have energy left to spill.”

Illustration from “Even Animals Go to Bed”, scene 5: The Giraffe

The Giraffe

“Hi, giraffe! Can I hop on your back and go for a ride?
I’d like to wander with you by my side.”

The giraffe smiled and replied:
“I walk by day, I rest by night.”

Leo nodded and said, “That’s okay,
I’ll look somewhere else and come back your way.
I promise it’s true, no tricks, no pretend,
I’m not sleepy at all... so I’ll go play until the end!”

The Forest Deer

“The forest never sleeps, I know I’m right!”
Leo stepped inside where shadows grew,
certain he’d find someone awake and new.

Leaves whispered, the moon hung low.
The forest breathed, calm and slow.

A deer stepped softly under a tree,
then lay down gently, slow and pleased.
“No more running, night is here.
The forest sleeps, there’s nothing to fear.”

The Jungle Elephant

“I’ll go to the jungle!”
Leo said with delight.
“I’ll find a big animal
who can play with me all night!”

The air felt warm, the leaves hung wide.
An elephant swayed from side to side.

“You’re huge,” he said. “You must stay up!”
The elephant smiled. “Not after this shower,
my eyes will shut.”

Illustration from “Even Animals Go to Bed”, scene 8: The Kangaroo

The Kangaroo

High under the stars in the quiet land,
Leo saw tracks in the silver sand.

“A kangaroo! You bounce and play all day!
You won’t need a bed.”

Inside the kangaroo’s pouch, warm and tight,
a tiny joey slept through the night.

“I jump when the sun is bright, but I rest at night.
Sleep helps us grow, both big and small,
so tomorrow we’re ready to jump into it all.”

Illustration from “Even Animals Go to Bed”, scene 9: The Sloth

The Sloth

High above, the sloth barely moved,
so calm, so slow, completely soothed.

“Slow is lovely,” the sloth replied,
“there’s nothing to chase on the quiet side.”

“You don’t even play!” Leo complained.
“That’s true,” said the sloth. “But I’m well entertained.”

Illustration from “Even Animals Go to Bed”, scene 10: The Dolphins

The Dolphins

The ocean shimmered, dark and wide.
Leo stepped close to the tide.

“Dolphins play all day,” he said with cheer.
“Surely you stay up, with nothing to fear!”

A dolphin surfaced, smooth and slow.
“I rest while I swim,” it whispered low.

“Even in the water they rest!” Leo said, eyes bright.

Illustration from “Even Animals Go to Bed”, scene 11: The Polar Bear

The Polar Bear

Snow fell gently, soft and light,
covering the world in quiet white.

A polar bear slept in a cozy round,
wrapped in silence, safe and sound.

“You too?” Leo asked, voice low.
The bear breathed deep, no need to show.

“The cold stays out when I rest deep,
look how late it is, it’s time to sleep.”

Illustration from “Even Animals Go to Bed”, scene 12: The Penguins

The Penguins

Penguins huddled side by side,
warm and close, a gentle guide.

“Sleeping’s better when we’re near,
together makes the night feel clear.”

“Nobody stays up,” Leo confessed.
“They all know when it’s time to rest.”

Maybe Playing Can Wait

The boy hugged his mango, snug and tight,
his eyes felt soft, his thoughts less bright.

“Maybe staying up can wait,” he said,
as sleepy dreams filled his head.

The doorway faded. The night grew still.
Leo felt heavy... calm... until

“Sleep helps me grow and feel okay,
and wakes me to a brand new day.”

Illustration from “Even Animals Go to Bed”, scene 14: Goodnight!

Goodnight!

The doorway faded. The night stayed kind.
His bed felt warm, his body fine.

“Even animals go to bed,
so they don’t grow tired, but strong instead.”

The mango, close by, gave him a hug.
The day was done, the night was snug.

Leo closed his eyes, mango held tight.

Goodnight!

Frequently asked questions

What age is this story for?

It’s written for children aged 3 to 5. It’s in rhyme, with simple rhymes that children pick up quickly and love to finish. With 2 year olds it works well if you read just the monkey and polar bear parts.

Why do animal stories help children sleep?

Children identify with animals and accept an idea more easily when a monkey or a bear explains it than when an adult does. Seeing that every animal rests makes bedtime feel normal without turning it into an order.
