The Forest Animals’ Christmas

Los animales y la familia de topos celebran juntos la Navidad bajo el gran abeto decorado

Looking for a Christmas animal story to read as a family? Every December, the squirrel, the rabbit, the fox, the hedgehog and the little mice celebrate Christmas under the big fir tree in the clearing. This year they argue so much about the decorations that the tree stays bare, until a family of homeless moles reminds them what really matters.

A Tiny Mango story about friendship and generosity for children aged 3 to 7. It takes about 5 minutes to read.

The story

A squirrel, a rabbit, a fox and a hedgehog argue in front of the big snowy fir tree while the little mice hide

The Big Fir Tree in the Clearing

In the forest clearing stood a magnificent fir tree. Squirrel wanted shiny nuts, Rabbit preferred ribbons, Fox wanted lanterns and Hedgehog insisted on pinecones. They all spoke at once, and the tree stayed undecorated.

The Mole Family

A rustle came from beneath the roots. A family of moles had lost their home when the ground flooded, and they were searching for somewhere warm before nightfall. The friends forgot their argument and hurried to help.

A Basket of Pine Nuts

Squirrel brought a basket of pine nuts to feed the little moles. Rabbit gathered soft moss for bedding, while Fox and Hedgehog collected dry leaves and branches for a shelter.

Knocking on Every Door

The friends knocked at the doors of their forest neighbors. Everyone brought something useful: twigs, dry grass, soft feathers and a warm piece of cloth. Soon, the pile of supplies grew taller than the moles.

A Shelter Before Nightfall

Before sunset, they built a snug little shelter under the fir's broad branches. The mole family settled inside, safe from the wind, and thanked everyone for helping them feel at home.

A Tree with Something from Everyone

Then the friends decorated the tree together. Each ornament told a story: a ribbon from Rabbit, a lantern from Fox, pinecones from Hedgehog and shiny nuts from Squirrel. The tree looked wonderful because every friend had added something.

A Free Spot Under the Branches

When the celebration began, the moles joined the animals beneath the branches. There was room for everyone, and the friends discovered that the loveliest Christmas decoration was making sure nobody was left outside.

  • In “A Tree with Something from Everyone”, ask your little one which decoration they would hang on the big fir tree.

Story guide for families and teachers

In a snowy forest, a squirrel, a rabbit, a fox, a hedgehog and a family of little mice can’t agree on how to decorate the big fir tree, and it stays bare. When they find a family of moles who have lost their home, they forget their argument and hurry to help. A Christmas animal story about sharing and about what we can achieve together.

Moral

Sharing what we have and helping those in need can turn a simple Christmas into an unforgettable celebration.

What it works on

  • Sharing what we have with those who need it.
  • Solving disagreements by listening to other people’s ideas.
  • Teamwork: everyone brings something different.
  • Empathy: noticing how others are feeling.

After-reading activity

Decorate a branch or a corner of your home with one ornament chosen by each member of the family, just like the animals did with the big fir tree. Then choose together something you can share this Christmas: a toy, food for a food bank or an afternoon with someone who is on their own.

Frequently asked questions

What age is this story for?

For children aged 3 to 7. The animals are perfect for the youngest, who laugh at the arguments about nuts, ribbons, lanterns and pinecones; older children better understand the moles’ story and the message about sharing.

What does this Christmas animal story teach?

That Christmas is more beautiful when nobody spends it alone. The animals start out arguing about decorations and end up building a shelter for the moles and decorating the tree together, each with what they do best.

How long does it take to read?

About 5 minutes at a calm pace. If you want to make it last longer, pause at each animal so your little one can guess what it will bring to the shelter before you read it aloud.

Is there a book with my little one as the main character?

Yes. At Tiny Mango we create personalized storybooks where your little one is the main character, with their name and a 3D character created from their photo. They make a meaningful Christmas gift that gets read again and again for years.
